How Long Does Lip Filler Really Last?
The usual answer is about a year. Some imaging studies say filler can stay in the face much longer. Here's what each kind of evidence actually measured, and why both can be true.
Quick Answer
Results tracked to about a year; most people still improved at 1 year
Filler detected in the mid-face at least 2 years later
We found no imaging studies

What the Lip Studies and Labels Say
The numbers you usually hear come from the clinical studies behind FDA approval, which followed people for a set period and measured how their lips looked.
Juvederm Volbella XC
The share of people whose lip fullness was still improved by at least one point on the study scale was 71.1% at 6 months, 65.1% at 9 months, and 61.8% at 1 year. The study followed people through 12 months.
Juvederm Ultra XC
A majority of people in the lip study still showed improved lip fullness through 12 months. Measured lip volume rose by an average of 0.61 cc at month 3 and was 0.54 cc above baseline at month 12.
Restylane Kysse and Silk
Galderma, the manufacturer, says Restylane Kysse lasts up to 1 year. The lip study for Restylane Silk followed people for 24 weeks.
Two things are worth noticing. First, these studies stopped at a fixed point, so they can't tell you what happened after it. Second, they measured how lips looked, not whether any filler was left.
What Longer-Term Studies Have Found
A different kind of research asks whether filler is still physically there, using scans.
An MRI study of 33 patients (2024)
Radiologists found hyaluronic acid filler in the mid-face of all 33 patients at least 2 years after injection. Some had not had filler for many years, and the longest case was up to 15 years.
A review of the research (2024)
A systematic review of eight studies concluded that hyaluronic acid fillers can last longer than 12 months, with cases of more than 2 years.
Why Both Answers Can Be True
The two kinds of research answer different questions. The lip studies asked whether lips still looked fuller. The imaging studies asked whether filler could still be detected. Filler showing up on a scan doesn't mean it still makes a visible difference.
The longer-term evidence also has real limits:
We found no published research measuring how long filler stays in the lips on imaging. So the honest answer for lips is: the visible result in the lip studies was tracked for about a year, and whether filler lingers in the lips beyond that hasn't been studied the way it has in the mid-face.
What Affects How Long Filler Lasts
The review also found that differences in technique between studies meant no maximum lifespan could be set. Your provider can tell you what they see with the specific product they use.
Questions to Ask Before a Top-Up
Juvederm Ultra XC labeling says touch-up treatments may be needed to reach and keep the result. If you're deciding whether it's time for more, these questions can help:
How much of my last filler do you think is still there, and how can you tell?
Which product did you use last time, and how long have results lasted for your patients with it in the lips?
How do you decide when a top-up is needed rather than following a fixed schedule?
Would waiting longer between sessions make sense for me?
If I have filler left from a past treatment, how does that change how much you would add?
If your lips look much smaller within the first two weeks, that can be swelling going down rather than filler wearing off. Our guide on whether lip filler dissolves on its own covers that difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does lip filler last?
The lip studies behind FDA approval point to about a year. In the Juvederm Volbella XC study, 61.8% of people still had improved lip fullness at 1 year, and Galderma says Restylane Kysse lasts up to 1 year. Separately, an MRI study of mid-face filler found filler still detectable at least 2 years later in every patient scanned. How long a filler lasts also depends on the filler material and where it is injected.
Can lip filler last for years?
We found no published research measuring how long filler stays in the lips specifically. In the mid-face, an MRI study of 33 patients found hyaluronic acid filler still detectable at least 2 years after injection in all of them, and a 2024 review concluded that hyaluronic acid fillers can last longer than 12 months, with cases of more than 2 years.
If filler can still show up on a scan, why do my lips look like it's gone?
Filler being detectable on MRI is not the same as it still being visible. The MRI study measured whether filler was present, not how lips or faces looked. A 2024 review also notes that MRI cannot separate injected hyaluronic acid from bound water and newly formed collagen. Ask your provider to look at your lips before deciding on more filler.
Does lip filler wear off faster than filler in other areas?
We found no published research comparing how long filler lasts in the lips with other areas of the face. A 2024 review reports that more mobile areas of the face are associated with faster breakdown, and that injected volume, injection site, and the filler's concentration and cross-linking also play a role.
How often should I get lip filler top-ups?
There is no fixed schedule in the published research. Juvederm Ultra XC labeling says touch-up treatments may be needed to reach and maintain the result, and the lip studies stopped following people at 12 months. Ask your provider how they decide when a top-up is needed, and how much of your last filler they think is still there.
