What Lip Filler Is
The lip fillers discussed on this site are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. Your body makes its own hyaluronic acid and continuously breaks it down and replaces it. Filler is cross-linked hyaluronic acid: a gel that holds water and lasts longer in the body than your own hyaluronic acid.

Products Approved for Lips
Lip augmentation is one of the uses the FDA has approved for some dermal fillers. Products approved for the lips include Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella XC (made by Allergan, part of AbbVie) and Restylane Silk and Restylane Kysse (made by Galderma). Their approvals are for adults over 21, or 21 and older.

Recovery
Swelling, tenderness, firmness, lumps or bumps, and bruising are listed among common injection-site reactions. In the lip study for one hyaluronic acid filler, most were mild or moderate and lasted 14 days or less, which makes about two weeks a reasonable point to judge the result.

Risks and Warning Signs
The FDA lists bruising, swelling, lumps, and infection among dermal filler risks. Filler injected into a blood vessel can cause tissue death, vision problems including blindness, and stroke.
Contact your provider right away, or go to urgent care or the emergency room, if you notice pain that is severe or getting worse, or skin that turns white, mottled, dusky, or grey. Lip Filler vs Lip Flip

How long a filler lasts depends on the filler material and where it is injected. The lip studies for Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella XC followed people for 12 months, and Galderma says Restylane Kysse lasts up to 1 year. Ask your provider how long results have lasted for their patients with the product they use.
Does lip filler hurt?
